It may be a craft based industry but gate maker Nick Clemmit Joinery is far removed from the idea of handmade 5 bar gates.

At their two factories in North Yorkshire, Nick has been making gates all his life, man and boy. He says “we make a high quality product at a premium price, as farmers are canny folk. So to achieve this we have a workshop full of specialist woodworking machinery”.

On our last meeting to sort out the “fancy” extraction heads on a special multi head mortise we got into a conversation about the rising price of oil and the impact it had on our business.

Firstly, consider your wood waste as an asset and make that asset into a profit by burning it cleanly to heat your workshop.

Secondly, add your yearly oil bills and skip charges together to prove your investment in a heater will pay for itself in less than two years.

Thirdly, you now have day by day in-house control of your waste plus a large reduction in your carbon footprint, both in your heating oil and fuel oil for the skip wagon. (16.9ton CO2 in his case).

The sums based on 40 hours per week and oil @ 70p per litres over 28 weeks heating season and the fuel fills 8 x 14 yard skips.
Pay back = 13 months and saves £ 5,500 per annum, plus oil has gone up by 4% since the installation.
